The Department of Posts has brought some significant changes related to speed post. These will become effective from October 1, 2025. After integrating the registered post this month, the next step is to improve the Speed Post services. Since its (speed post) launch around 39 years back, the speed post has served millions of Indians in sending their parcels. Over the years, it has evolved as a trusted mail service and has become cost-effective compared to private courier companies. However, effective October 1, an upgraded speed post service will take effect to make it faster, efficient, and user-friendly.

Speed Post New Features

Here are the changes that are to take effect from next month:

OTP-based delivery – the documents or the parcels will be delivered only after OTP verification

Online payment facility – users will be able to pay online to book a speed post

SMS-based delivery notifications – to keep users informed about the delivery

Online booking services – to provide hassle-free dispatch of parcels

Real-time delivery updates – for live tracking of packages

Registration facility – to ensure addressee-specific delivery for both documents and parcels

These new features would make availing the service more convenient, transparent, and secure.

However, these are not the only changes to be implemented. The new tariffs for speed post will also apply from October 1.

New Tariffs

Here is the table of the new tariffs:

Notably, for availing of the specialised service, such as OTP delivery or registration facility, an additional Rs 5 charge along with applicable GST will be levied. A 10 per cent discount will be given to the students and a 5 per cent discount to the bulk-order customers.

This is the first change in tariffs in the inland speed post since 2012. Now the efforts are to make the postal service updated to suit the current requirements. According to the government statement, the tariffs have been revised to meet the operational cost and improve services, along with funding innovations. So, the services will be introduced, but to make them available, one will need to pay a bit more.
