The Delhi government has started the distribution of the Ayushman Vay Vandana Card today, April 28, 2025. In an event at Thyagaraj Stadium, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta distributed Ayushman cards to seniors from different districts in Delhi.
The health insurance scheme has been formally launched in Delhi beginning this month on April 10, 2025. According to media reports around 1.7 lakh cards have been issued and are to be distributed. Note that the scheme offers Rs 5 lakh health insurance to the eligible applicants as per the list in the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) of 2011 and another database. In 2024, the scheme has been extended to seniors aged 70 years and above.

The scheme also offers beneficiaries the facility to avail comprehensive healthcare as well. For this, there are health and wellness centers, called Arogya Mandirs, where beneficiaries can go for preventive check-ups, as well as rehabilitative and palliative care.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Delhi cabinet minister Kapil Mishra said, "Everyone above the age of 70 will receive free healthcare up to Rs 10 lakh (Rs 5 lakh will be given by Centre and Rs 5 lakh by Delhi govt). Now, anyone's father, grandfather, mother, or grandmother above the age of 70, regardless of their income status, can access free treatment. What makes this even better is that if someone doesn't have a card and requires emergency treatment, the hospital can provide one. This is the fulfilment of Modi Ji's guarantee, and Rekha Gupta has ensured this promise is honoured."

Notably to avail of the Ayushman's benefits, one has to have the Ayushman Vay Vandana Card. The insurance coverage can be availed at both government and private hospitals, which are empanelled under the scheme.
Considering the medical inflation which has been growing in two-digits for the last few years, it is difficult for many seniors to avail of healthcare facilities because of financial constraints. The expansion of the scheme for all seniors (70 and above) irrespective of their economic background is expected to help the elderly.
