The Income Tax Department has asked taxpayers not to respond to some of the emails sent under the Advance Tax e-Campaign for Assessment Year 2026-27 following receipt of complaints that some of the emails contained incorrect information regarding 'significant transactions'.
The clarification came following widespread complaints by several taxpayers stating that they had received email reminders that their advance tax payments for the financial year 2025-26 were not in accordance with their financial activities during the year.
Advance Tax Reminder Emails Cause Confusion
The emails said that the department had information that there were certain financial transactions associated with the Permanent Account Number (PAN) of the tax payer and that the advance tax paid during the year appeared to be not commensurate with such activities.
The communication further put emphasis on what it termed as “significant transactions” conducted by the taxpayer in the year. These details were intended to trigger the review of the financial information by the taxpayers to check if the advance tax payments received were sufficient.
However, many recipients said that the transactions mentioned in the emails did not represent actual financial activities. In some cases, taxpayers reported that the emails were referring to transactions that they had not undertaken, or were not relevant to them.
Department Issues Clarification
After receiving complaints from taxpayers, the Income Tax Department gave a clarification on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The department said that it received complaints that some taxpayers received emails with inaccurate information about “significant transactions” as part of Advance Tax e-Campaign for Assessment Year 2026-27, which is the financial year 2025-26.
It thanked taxpayers for bringing the issue to its notice and said it was working out to resolve the issue along with its service provider and requested that taxpayers ignore the previous email communication related to the advance tax campaign.
What The Original Email Said
The emails sent under the campaign mentioned that the department has received information that certain financial transactions are linked to the PAN of the recipient for the financial year 2025-26.
The message stated that the advance tax paid during the year seemed not commensurate with those financial transactions. As part of what was described as a taxpayer service initiative, the email pointed out some transactions categorised as “significant transactions”undertaken during the year.
What Taxpayers Should Do
The department has asked taxpayers to check their transaction details using the e-Campaign available in the compliance portal through income tax e-filing website.
Advance tax reminders are typically sent to remind taxpayers to check their financial details and see if their advance tax payments are sufficient. The last part of advance tax for the financial year 2025-26 is payable on March 15, 2026.
For now, taxpayers are being asked to overlook the previous email communication with incorrect transaction details as the problem is being solved.
