If you are planning to visit your bank on June 6, 2026, make sure to check whether or not your state is observing a bank holiday. According to the holiday calendar of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), bank branches in the state of Mizoram and in Kolkata in West Bengal are closed. In all other states and Union Territories, banks are open and functioning as usual.

The RBI prepares separate holiday calendars for different states because some holidays are linked to local festivals, historical events or regional observances. As a result, a bank holiday in one state does not necessarily apply across the country.

States Where Banks Are Closed Today

Bank branches are closed in Mizoram on the occasion of Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP) Day. In Kolkata, banks are shut to mark the birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mukherjee. Customers in these locations are advised to plan their branch visits accordingly. However, digital banking channels will provide access to most day-to-day banking services.

Why Is MHIP Day Observed

The holiday in Mizoram marks Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP) Day. MHIP is a women’s organisation founded on July 6, 1974, with the aim of addressing social issues and improving the welfare of women across the state.

Over the years, the organisation has worked on matters related to women’s rights, community development and changes to customary practices. The state observes its foundation day each year.

Why Is Kolkata Observing A Bank Holiday

Banks in Kolkata are closed today to commemorate the birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mukherjee, born on July 6, 1901. A barrister by training, Mukherjee was active in public life and served in both the state and national governments. He was part of the first Union Cabinet after Independence before stepping down following differences over policy. He passed away on June 23, 1953.

Online Banking Continues As Usual

Even though bank branches are closed in the two locations, customers can continue to access most banking services through digital platforms. Unified Payments Interface (UPI), mobile banking, Netbanking, ATMs and card-based transactions will function throughout the day as usual.

Services that require a physical visit, such as cheque processing, document submission, demand draft issuance or account-related assistance at branches, will be available once banks reopen on the next working day.
