The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts were introduced in August 2014. The aim was to bring unbanked individuals within the banking system. In the last 10 years, more than 56 crore accounts have been opened, almost four times compared to 14.72 crore accounts as of March 2015. However, of the total 56.04 crore Jan Dhan accounts as of July 30, 2025, 13.05 crore were inoperative. While these accounts are an effort towards financial inclusion, and to pass on government subsidies and other benefits directly to the eligible beneficiaries, if these stand dormant, the services in that account get hampered.

When Does An Account Become Dormant?

According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) guidelines, if there is no customer-induced transaction in an account for over two years, the account becomes inoperative or dormant. In case of a dormant account, withdrawals (debit transactions) are not allowed. Then, the customers have to submit their fresh Know Your Customer (KYC) documents to their bank to activate the account. Per guidelines, banks inform their customer via email, SMS, or letter, but if the customer does not submit the documents, such accounts are transferred to the RBI’s Depositor Education & Awareness (DEA) fund. The details of which are published on the bank’s website.

While there is the UDGAM portal to reclaim the amount in such accounts, it is always better to keep the account active, or close it if it is no more needed.

Jan Dhan Yojana Account Re-KYC Drive

Considering a higher number of Jan Dhan account holders in the rural areas (66.7 per cent), banks have been running a three-month campaign, from July 1, 2025, to September 30, 2025, in various districts across India. Since July 1, around 1.77 lakh camps have been conducted.

However, these camps are not only for re-KYC, but also to bring more people into the banking system by opening new accounts, and informing them of government’s insurance schemes, such as Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, and pension schemes.

According to a recently released statement by the Ministry of Finance, “Continued emphasis is being laid on educating account holders to maximise the use of banking services and prevent dormancy. Banks are also making efforts to reduce inoperative accounts under PMJDY by contacting account holders.”

How To Reactivate A Dormant Account?

Jan Dhan account holders can visit these camps organised in their area and submit their KYC. Once the documents are verified, the account is reactivated, typically within 1-3 days. Note that these camps will be held only until September 30, 2025. However, the other way to update KYC and activate the account is to visit the bank and submit the documents.

Process Of Activation

• Visit the bank branch with the latest KYC documents

• Give an application for account activation and submit the documents

• The bank will verify the documents and update the details in its system

• Usually, it takes less than three working days for banks to update a customer’s KYC in the account and change the account status to ‘Active’

• Once done, the customer is informed via SMS or email regarding their account reactivation

As there is no minimum balance requirement in a Jan Dhan account, anyone can open this account. This makes them eligible to avail of government subsidies, and enjoy banking facilities such as cash deposit and withdrawal from ATM and CDMs, and a free RuPay debit card. They can also avail life and accidental Insurance by paying a nominal premium under PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (life insurance) and PM Suraksha Bima Yojana (accidental insurance).
