Claim requires visiting the bank with identity and ownership documents.
If you or someone in your household has a bank account that has not been touched for years, the likelihood is that the money sitting idle in it has been labelled as "unclaimed." Indian banks have credited a combined sum of over Rs 67,000 crore in unclaimed deposits to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) till June 30, 2025. The data was brought to Parliament on July 28, 2025.
Such deposits typically include money lying idle in savings or fixed deposit accounts that haven't been operated for at least ten years. Once this period passes, the amount is moved to the RBI's Depositor Education and Awareness (DEA) Fund.
To help people find and recover this money, the RBI launched the UDGAM portal in August 2023.
What Is UDGAM
UDGAM (Unclaimed Deposits – Gateway to Access Information) is an digital, centralised platform via which customers can search for unclaimed bank deposits of numerous banks at the same time. Earlier, people had to visit or contact each of these banks separately to seek out dormant or forgotten accounts. As of July 2025, the platform carries data from 30 top banks spanning India's banking network to a significant extent.
How to Use the Portal
It is simple and takes just a few minutes:
Go to [udgam.rbi.org.in](https://udgam.rbi.org.in)
Register through your mobile number
Enter OTP to log in
Enter your name and one ID detail like PAN, passport, voter ID, or driving licence
Choose the banks you would like to search, or select all
If there is a match, the portal shows you the name of the bank, type of account, and branch. It does not show you the amount of the deposit because of security reasons.
What to Do if You Find a Match
If you discover that there is an unclaimed deposit, the next thing to do is call the relevant bank. Most banks will request you to:
Visit the branch in person
Supply identity evidence, residence proof, and ownership proof of the account
For a deceased owner, submit the death certificate and documents of law that confirm succession or relationship
Once confirmed, the bank will transfer the money. While some banks currently offer online claim forms, most require physical verification.
Most people, especially senior citizens or legitimate heirs, may not realise that there is a lost account. With over Rs 67,000 crore still unclaimed, a quick search on the UDGAM portal may perhaps retrieve money belonging to you or your relatives.
