The coming holiday-shortened week (April 15-17) is packed with several key economic data releases, which are likely to shape the direction of domestic markets

The domestic stock market will have only three trading days this week

The week gone by was a tumultuous one for domestic stock markets, characterised by Trump's 90-day tariff pause, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, a declining US Dollar and falling US bond yields. The upcoming holiday-shortened week is packed with several macroeconomic data releases, Q4 earnings and various geopolitical developments that are likely to shape the direction of domestic markets.

India's stock market was closed on April 14 in observance of Dr BR Ambedkar’s birth anniversary. It will also observe a trading holiday on April 18 on the occasion of Good Friday. Therefore, the domestic stock market will have only three trading days this week.

US-China Trade War

Last week, US President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause on tariffs on nearly all its major trading partners except for China, on which the Trump administration instead sharply increased the duties to 145 per cent. Later, towards the week's end, Trump announced an exemption from tariffs on imported electronic products, including those from China.

Investors now await further developments on the trade war between the two economies.

India CPI, WPI inflation

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has rescheduled the release of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation data to April 15. Initially set for April 14, the announcement was postponed due to a government holiday in observance of Dr BR Ambedkar's birth anniversary.

According to Bajaj Broking Research, the WPI indicator will offer insights into wholesale inflation trends, which are important for understanding cost pressures at the production level and may influence the Reserve Bank of India’s future rate decisions.

US Industrial Production

The Federal Reserve Board will be reporting the US Industrial Production data for March 2025 on April 16. The data will provide a snapshot of the strength of the manufacturing sector and overall industrial activity, said Bajaj Broking Research.

US Initial Jobless Claims

The Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the US Initial Jobless Claim report on April 17. According to Bajaj Broking Research, an unexpected rise in claims could indicate weakness in the labour market and potentially impact the Federal Reserve's interest rate decisions.

China Q1 GDP, Industrial Production, Unemployment Rate

China is set to release three important macroeconomic data for March 2025 - Q1 GDP growth, Industrial Production, and the Unemployment Rate. These data will provide a full picture of China’s recovery after the pandemic, domestic demand, and labour market conditions.
