Moon sightings trigger revised notifications
In light of the upcoming Eid al-Fitr (Bakrid) festivities, the specific date for the same remains clouded with confusion nationwide. People are confused whether the festival is to be held on May 27, 2026 or May 28, 2026. The confusion arises as the festivity is dependent on moon sightings and local announcements. Due to this confusion, several state governments have revised their official holiday notifications. This decision affects the days the banks remain open.
The celebration of Bakrid is based on the Islamic lunar calendar, meaning the exact date depends on moon sightings. Initially, many states had declared May 27, 2026, as the holiday. However, the particular date and time are questioned due to beliefs and differences in lunar sightings in different states.
As a result, banks in different states will observe the holiday on different days, and it is also advised that customers check the local RBI holiday calendar or confirm with their banks before planning a visit.
Several states are expecting to observe Eid al-Fitr on May 27, 2026, especially where the original notice remains unchanged. As per the state-wise holiday lists, banks in the regions of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Kerala, and several of the northeastern states are likely to remain closed on May 27, 2026.
Jammu and Kashmir will be observing the festival on May 27, 2026, as well as May 28, 2026; hence, the banks will remain closed on both these days.
Some states have officially shifted the holiday to May 28, 2026. Telangana, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, and parts of southern and western India are expected to follow the revised dates. West has also revised its notification regarding the holiday and made an announcement that stated educational institutions and offices are to remain closed on May 28, 2026.
In the case of Kerala, the state has witnessed extreme confusion as the moon sighting differs greatly from that in northern India due to its geographical location. As per a report by the Economic Times, it is indicated that the state government may consider May 27, 2026 and May 28, 2026, both as holidays.
It is advised for customers who wish to visit their bank branches for redressals and other miscellaneous purposes, to first check with the bank branch if they are functioning on which day. Since the festival differs from state to state, a branch operating in one city may remain closed in another. The most reliable option for customers remains to be the Reserve Bank of India’s state-wise holiday list to seek confirmation.
