Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has launched WhatsApp-based services for Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) members. The facility will allow subscribers to access important account details through the organisation’s verified EPFO WhatsApp service, thus reducing the need to visit EPFO offices for routine queries.
The announcements were made during the celebration of EPFO’s 74th Foundation Day.
Members can use the platform to check their provident fund (PF) balance, view their latest five transactions, and access passbook information without visiting an EPFO office. The service will also provide personalised guidance and assistance to members in completing requirements related to the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PMVBRY).
Along with the WhatsApp facility, Mandaviya also introduced an automatic settlement system for eligible inoperative EPF accounts.
Under this arrangement, subscribers with Aadhaar-verified inactive accounts and balances of up to Rs 1,000 will not have to submit individual withdrawal claims. EPFO will initiate the settlement process after completing the required identity and bank account verification. Once verification is completed, the eligible amount will be transferred to the beneficiary's bank account.
According to the Labour Ministry, around 100,000 inactive accounts, involving a total amount of approximately Rs 5 crore, are expected to benefit from this facility.
The initiative will simplify the process of recovering small, unclaimed PF balances. Eligible members will not need to file separate claims for the automatic settlement.
The foundation day programme also featured the release of seven publications covering different aspects of EPFO’s work. The publications focus on knowledge development, institutional learning, legal awareness and governance.
Mandaviya highlighted EPFO’s 74-year journey and its role in managing PF savings for workers. He highlighted that the organisation has accumulated a corpus of Rs 32 lakh crore through contributions from more than 80 million members.
The minister also asked EPFO officials to focus on new initiatives centred on workers’ needs as the organisation approaches its 75th year. He emphasised the need to adapt administrative processes and build resilience in response to changing requirements.
The two initiatives announced at the foundation day event cover different member needs. While the WhatsApp facility provides access to account information, automatic settlement will help eligible subscribers receive small balances from inactive EPF accounts without filing individual claims.
