Missing a contribution under the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan Yojana (PM-SYM) can make an account inactive, but subscribers have a way to restore it. The Ministry of Labour and Employment has reminded subscribers that they can reactivate such accounts by clearing their unpaid contributions along with interest within three years.

The ministry shared the reminder on September 15, 2026. Subscribers can complete the payment through the Maandhan Portal or visit their nearest Common Services Centre (CSC) for assistance.

What Is PM-SYM

PM-SYM is a voluntary pension scheme for eligible workers in the unorganised sector. Workers between 18 and 40 years of age can join the scheme, subject to conditions.

The monthly contribution depends on the subscriber’s age when joining. It starts at Rs 55 a month for an 18-year-old and goes up to Rs 200 a month for someone joining at 40. The Centre makes an equal contribution. So, a subscriber who pays Rs 55 a month gets another Rs 55 from the government towards the pension account.

The scheme is meant for individuals, such as domestic workers, street vendors, construction workers and agricultural workers, among others. A person’s monthly income should not exceed Rs 15,000. The individual should also not be covered under the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), the government-funded National Pension Scheme, and should not be an income taxpayer either.

How To Recover An Inactive Account

Subscribers whose accounts have become inactive can first check the status of their PM-SYM account and find out the amount of pending contributions. They then need to pay the unpaid contributions along with the applicable interest. The payment can be made through the Maandhan Portal. Those who need help with the process can visit a nearby CSC.

The three-year period applies from the point at which the account becomes inactive. Subscribers need to complete the payment within this period to reactivate the account. The amount required for restoration will vary from one subscriber to another, depending on the number of missed contributions and the interest due.

Pension And Family Benefit Under PM-SYM

PM-SYM provides an assured monthly pension of Rs 3,000 after the subscriber turns 60, subject to the scheme’s conditions. The scheme also provides a pension benefit to the spouse after the subscriber’s death. The spouse is eligible for 50 per cent of the pension, or Rs 1,500 a month.

For subscribers who have missed payments, the latest ministry reminder is mainly about the opportunity to restore an inactive account instead of losing the benefits linked to the scheme. The key requirement is to clear the pending contributions and interest within the three-year period.
