My date of birth is 22 November, 1977, but the date mentioned on all documents is 22 November, 1975. Can I have an insurance policy issued to me on the basis of my actual date of birth? I do not have a birth certificate to prove this actual date.
Sundar Keshav, Chennai
Insurers require documentary proof of the date of birth of the insured before issuing a life cover because his age at the time of taking the policy forms the basis for determining his eligibility to take the policy and affects the premium. Moreover, mortality charges also depend on the age. Only documents such as school certificate, driving licence, passport and PAN card are accepted. Also, in the absence of a birth certificate that validates your actual date of birth, insurers will take into account the date of birth given on other available documents.
