If you use UPI apps regularly, whether to split bills with friends, pay for daily transport, or just to check your bank balance, some important changes are coming your way from August 1, 2025. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages the UPI system, is introducing a set of new rules. These are meant to reduce system overload, improve speed, and make transactions more secure for millions of users like you.
Day Limit on Balance Check
One of the major changes is putting a cap on balance checks. Consumers can check their account balance only 50 times a day from one UPI app. The objective is to cut down redundant balance requests and slow down the system for all.
New Cap on Viewing Linked Accounts
Another rule will limit the number of times users can view the list of bank accounts linked to their mobile number. From August, this will be allowed only 25 times a day. The aim is to cut down on extra load caused by repeated account information checks and to make the system more efficient.
Autopay Will Work Only During Off-Peak Hours
Those who use autopay for bills, subscriptions, or investments will need to keep track of new time slots. NPCI has decided that autopay transactions will only be allowed during certain off-peak hours. These include early morning, mid-afternoon, and late night. The purpose is to avoid server slowdowns during busy hours and ensure that normal payments go through smoothly.
Limit on Checking Failed Transaction Status
If a payment fails, users will now be able to check the status of that failed transaction only 3 times in a day. But the user will have wait at least 90 seconds between checks. If you've ever had a payment fail and kept hitting refresh in frustration, this rule might seem strict, but it's designed to help the system recover more effectively.
Stricter Guidelines for Banks and UPI Apps
Banks and UPI apps are also being asked to follow the new rules carefully. If they don't, NPCI could block their access to certain services or stop them from adding new users. This step is meant to keep the system stable and prevent major slowdowns.
Security Rule Already in Place Since June 30
A new safety feature has been in effect since June 30. Users can now view the sender's name before confirming a UPI transaction. This prevents incorrect payments and safeguards consumers from fraud.
No Change in Transaction Amount Limit
Users must also note that the new regulation does not impact the amount of money you can send or receive through UPI. The limits of transactions will be the same as before.
Why These Changes Matter
The main reason for these changes is to make the UPI system more efficient for all. By lowering unnecessary activity, the system will become faster, have fewer delays, and offer a safer and more trustworthy experience.
