Citizens should verify official announcements and avoid sharing unverified claims on social media
The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check unit has flagged as fake social media claims that a new Rs 1,000 currency banknote has been issued. In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on October 27, 2026, PIB Fact Check clarified that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made no announcement regarding the issuance of a new Rs 1,000 note.
The claim has circulated through social media posts showing a purported yellow-coloured Rs 1,000 banknote featuring a large temple illustration. Some social media handles and content creators have claimed that the note has been introduced or will soon enter circulation.
What Did PIB Fact Check Say About the Rs 1,000 Note?
In its post on X, PIB Fact Check scotched social media claims that a new Rs 1,000 banknote had been issued and labelled them as fake. The agency clarified that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had not announced the introduction of a new Rs 1,000 note.
“The RBI has made no announcement regarding the issuance of a new Rs 1,000 note,” PIB Fact Check stated.
The agency also urged people to verify information through official sources and avoid sharing unverified claims about new currency notes.
How Can People Verify Claims About New Currency Notes?
People can check the RBI’s official website for announcements and notifications about new banknotes. They should avoid treating viral images or social media posts as confirmation that a new denomination has been introduced.
PIB Fact Check has urged people to verify information through official sources and avoid sharing unverified claims. It also asked people to report suspicious content related to the central government through its WhatsApp number, +91 8799711259, or by emailing at factcheck@pib.gov.in.
The Rs 1,000 banknote ceased to be legal tender on November 8, 2016, when the government announced the withdrawal of the existing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes as part of a demonetisation process. The RBI subsequently introduced new Rs 500 notes and Rs 2,000 notes. The RBI announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes from circulation in May 2023 but they continue to remain legal tender. The Rs 1,000 denomination was not reintroduced.
The Rs 500 note is currently the highest denomination in the regular series of banknotes issued for circulation.
