Australia has put forward more stringent anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (AML/CTF) regulations to enhance the supervision of the cryptocurrency sector and combat financial crimes.
These proposed regulations, introduced by the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (AUSTRAC), come after amendments to the AML/CTF Act were passed by Parliament of Australia in November.
The revised framework seeks to address regulatory gaps, bolster oversight of high-risk areas, enhance customer due diligence (CDD) measures, impose stricter reporting requirements, and establish more rigorous rules for businesses.
The draft regulations are open for public consultation until February 14, 2025, with AUSTRAC urging industry stakeholders, especially those in the crypto and financial services sectors, to provide feedback to shape the final version of the framework.

ChatGPT was back online in Australia at the time of publication. The incident occurred on the same day ChatGPT was integrated into the latest version of Apple’s virtual assistant Siri on iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
