High temperatures or heat waves can increase the risk of your car catching fire, especially if it is parked outdoors or near flammable materials. A motor insurance policy covers any financial loss resulting from accidental fires, short circuits, or engine fires caused by extreme heat.

“Besides your comprehensive motor plan, one should also consider an engine protector cover, which can provide coverage in case of engine overheating or fluid leakage caused by extremely hot temperatures. This will cover issues like oil or content leakage and hydrostatic lock. This is very useful during the summer season when high temperatures can strain your car’s engine,” says Paras Pasricha, head, motor insurance, Policybazaar.

Proper Maintenance Is Key

Yes, skipping routine maintenance like air conditioners can cost more in the long run because of the increased repairs, and it may void insurance claims during extreme weather conditions. Regular maintenance helps in finding minor issues before they get bigger.

“Neglecting these minor issues may result in expensive repairs in the long run. Without proper maintenance, car parts can wear out faster and have a shorter lifespan. Most insurance policies have clauses that require adequate maintenance of the vehicle. The policyholders must take the required steps to maintain their vehicles. It is essential to do a proper maintenance schedule to minimize the risk of the car, especially during extreme weather conditions,” says Subhasish Mazumder, head- motor distribution, Bajaj Allianz General Insurance.

Have Necessary Add-ons

Yes, add-ons like engine protection or roadside assistance play a significant role and could help policyholders save thousands. These add-ons help to provide financial safety in case of unexpected vehicle problems. Engine damage add-on covers issues like water ingress, oil leakage, etc., and helps avoid expensive repairs and replacement of engine parts that usually cost a lot.

“At the same time, roadside assistance provides support when your vehicle breaks down somewhere on the road for reasons such as dead batteries, flat tyres, and fuel depletion,” says Mazumder.  It covers the cost of towing a car, minor repairs, etc. This helps you get help on the road and can save you from many expenses you may have to pay for these services out of pocket.
