The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has introduced a new way for customers to pay their policy premiums, and it’s as easy as sending a WhatsApp message.

On Friday (May 9) the state-run life insurer rolled out a premium payment facility via WhatsApp bot, aiming to make the process quicker and more convenient for its over 2 crore registered users on the LIC customer portal. This feature was formally launched by LIC's CEO and Managing Director, Siddhartha Mohanty, at a corporate event in Mumbai, alongside the Corporation’s senior leadership team.

Here’s how it works

LIC policyholders who are registered on the customer portal can now message the official LIC WhatsApp number, 8976862090, to check which policies are due for payment.

From there, they can complete the entire transaction within the chat window itself, using Unified Payments Interface (UPI) service, net banking, or debit/credit cards.

What does this eliminate? This means no redirects, no app-hopping, the whole process, including receipt generation, happens via WhatsApp.

“This option will provide ease of operations for LIC’s Customers and will be a handy tool to pay LIC premiums from anywhere, anytime through the fast growing medium of WhatsApp,” said Mohanty.

The public insurer sees this move as its broader push toward simplifying services and improving turnaround time through technology.

The customer portal of LIC has more than 2.2 crore registered policyholders, with over 3 lakh customers logging in every day for availing various online services, the life insurer stated in its official release.

For many policyholders, especially those who may not be entirely comfortable with navigating websites or apps, this bot-based service could offer a more familiar and frictionless experience.

The new facility is now live and available for all eligible LIC policyholders across India.
