Summary of this article

  • EPFO launched WhatsApp balance services on Nov 1, 2026.

  • Early users faced OTP failures, Aadhaar verification errors, and glitches.

  • Services are now stabilising; users can message +91 8796441800 to check EPF balance.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) launched its WhatsApp-based services for subscribers on November 1, 2026, allowing them to check their EPF balance, view the last five credit transactions, and download their passbook. Although the services were launched on WhatsApp to make it easier for subscribers to check balance-related details without logging in to a different portal or app, the facility showed glitches.

The WhatsApp-based services have been made officially available, but when subscribers tried to use them, they encountered one or the other error. Many users posted on X (formerly Twitter) on the next day of launch about the errors they had received, such as “We’re unable to send the OTP right now. Please try again after some time,” or “We could not verify your details for the Aadhaar linked mobile number ending with XXXXXXX.  Please try again to continue.”

A user named “Muthanna” posted, “Neither of PF portals works consistently, nor does this new interface. Whoever is managing EPFO IT infrastructure has zero software engineering knowledge; it’s been years of effort to simplify the overall experience; however, results are the same. Only option is to outsource now.”

Another user, named The Good Engineer, posted, “It’s not working. Do you guys even do a sanity check before rolling out?”

Several other users also posted complaints, sharing screenshots of the errors. Some even attributed the issues to EPFO’s sluggish IT infrastructure and systems.

Incidentally, the EPFO has approximately 80 million active subscribers, and to serve these many subscribers, a robust IT infrastructure and helpful customer service cannot be ignored. EPFO has been working to improve its system under its EPFO 3.0 initiatives, which includes both IT system upgradation and operational and administrative streamlining. WhatsApp services are part of this initiative.

Around July 2026, EPFO also migrated its unified member and employer portals to the Centralised IT-Enabled System (Cites) 2.01. The portal remained down for around a week, and the new portal’s options started in a phased manner.

The portal interface has been made user-friendly, and now, subscribers don’t need to log in to a separate portal to check their passbook. Although the UMANG app also provides the balance check service, accessing the details on WhatsApp is much easier than checking it on the portal or on UMANG. Moreover, WhatsApp service doesn’t require subscribers to remember a password or Universal Account Number (UAN) to access the details.

Ketan Das, business head, FinRight Technologies, wrote that he checked the status of EPFO’s WhatsApp services on November 4, 2026, and found that although the WhatsApp services were live, they were unstable. Das said that Day 1 of the launch of the WhatsApp service, they also received several queries related to the service. The fintech company works to resolve EPF-related issues for subscribers.

The unstable service could be attributed to the high traffic as well, because those who use the service during the peak traffic hours might face the glitches more often than those using it in the lean hours.

Notably, now the WhatsApp-based services are working better than in the initial 2-3 days of their launch. Users can check their EPF balance on WhatsApp by sending a ‘Hi’ message on WhatsApp to +91 8796441800 and proceed with the instructions received in response.
