The share price of Bharti Airtel surged on March 12, 2025 during the market pre-opening session following the telecos' announcement of a partnership with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to introduce Starlink's high-speed Internet services in India.
The telecom company, however, said that the collaboration remains subject to regulatory approvals.
Under the pact, Airtel retail stores will offer Starlink's equipment as well as help Starlink with a wider reach to connect with businesses, schools, communities and health centres.
Bharti Airtel said the pact is the first of its kind in India, but is contingent on SpaceX obtaining clearance to operate Starlink services in India.
The company’s stock has risen 4 per cent in 2025 so far and has given a return of 38 per cent over the past year.
Bharti Airtel share price opened in green, up 2.7 per cent from its previous close, at Rs 1,707, on March 12, at 9:15 am, on BSE.
How Will Bharti Airtel Pack with Starlink Help Indians
Sunil Bharti Mittal, founder and chairman, Bharti Enterprises, said that he expects customers will be able to carry their mobiles to the remotest part of the world soon.
“In my opening remark at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona, I made a call to both the telecom and satellite players to work together, combine their strengths, and complete the mission of connecting the unconnected, covering the oceans and the skies as well as difficult-to-reach areas. I am glad that this is being followed through with active announcements of partnerships between satellite companies and telecom operators," Mittal said in an official release.
This partnership between Bharti Airtel ans SpaceX is expected to be a new addition to the telecom sector technology list.
"For the telecom industry, the addition of satellite technology should be no different from bringing new technologies to its customers. Just like 4G, 5G, and 6G in the future, we will now have one more technology in our mix, i.e. SAT-G,” Mittal added.
Gopal Vittal, managing director and vice chairman, Airtel, said the pact is "a significant milestone" in the company’s efforts to enhance satellite connectivity.
He said the collaboration would help deliver high-speed broadband to even the most remote regions of India, increasing wider Internet accessibility.
"Starlink will complement and enhance Airtel’s suite of products to ensure reliable and affordable broadband for our Indian customers – wherever they live and work," Vittal said, in the official release.
Gwynne Shotwell, president and chief operating officer of SpaceX, expressed excitement about the agreement, emphasizing the transformative potential of Starlink in India.
"We are excited to work with Airtel and unlock the transformative impact Starlink can bring to the people of India," Shotwell stated, in the official release. She also acknowledged Airtel’s key role in the country’s telecommunications sector.
