Benchmark indices opened on a positive note on Wedensday, May 15. The BSE Sensex opened in the green, up by 222 points, or 0.27 per cent at 81,370. Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty 50 opened in green, up by 57 points, or 0.23 per cent at 24,636. Additionally, the GIFT Nifty is trading in the green at 24,787.50 as of 9:44 am, down 0.21 per cent. The pre-market signal suggests investors are treading cautiously after Tuesday’s bout of profit-taking and ahead of a flurry of corporate earnings. The GIFT Nifty is seen as a reliable early indicator of market sentiment.

The Sensex closed registering a drop of 1,281.68 points or 1.55 per cent at 81,148.22, while the Nifty was down 346.35 points or 1.39 per cent at 24,578.35 on May 13.

Global Market Snapshot

Asian markets opened mixed, offering little clarity for direction. Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped 0.57 per cent, while the broader Topix index fell more sharply, down 1.05 per cent. South Korea’s Kospi edged up 0.67 per cent, and the Kosdaq held nearly flat with a slight gain of 0.02 per cent. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 was down 0.1 per cent, maintaining a muted tone. Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 1.16 per cent, but China’s CSI 300 dipped 0.21 per cent.

Oil prices softened, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude slipping 0.38 per cent to $63.43 per barrel. Spot gold eased 0.30 per cent to $3,240.43 an ounce, continuing its volatile run.

Base metals, however, posted modest gains across the board. Copper rose 0.83 per cent, marking a fourth straight day of increases. Nickel reversed earlier losses to gain 0.64 per cent, while aluminium added 0.40 per cent. Zinc continued its rally with a 0.93 per cent gain, and lead recovered 0.58 per cent.
