Summary of this article

  • HDFC, Axis, and Tata resume their Gold ETF subscriptions.

  • Earlier limits on large and lumpsum investments are removed.

  • The decision follows the normalisation of overall market conditions.

Investment in Gold Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and Gold ETF Fund of Funds (FoF) is popular among investors who seek portfolio diversification and wish to add the yellow gold to their demat account.

The investor interest in this asset class is highlighted in the data for the month of July from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (Amfi), as Gold ETFs attracted a solid net inflow of over Rs 1558.75 crore.

Amid the strong investor interest in the space, three mutual fund houses have announced the resumption of subscriptions in their respective Gold ETF and Gold ETF Fund of Fund schemes. The announcements hint at a return to normalised operating conditions for gold funds after a brief period of operational constraints.

Which Fund Houses Have Resumed Subscriptions

Three major asset management companies have resumed unrestricted investments after  announcing temporary curbs earlier this year. The fund houses include HDFC Mutual Fund, Axis Mutual Fund, and Tata Mutual Fund. Notably, these resumptions were announced between August 10 and August 20.

HDFC Mutual Fund was the first among the three to resume subscriptions in the HDFC Gold ETF Fund of Fund. According to the announcement made by the fund house, investors were allowed to execute lump sum purchases without any restriction, effective from August 14, 2026.

Shortly after the announcement, Axis Mutual Fund resumed the acceptance of direct subscription transactions by large investors for an amount exceeding Rs 25 in the Axis Gold ETF, effective from August 18, 2026. Presently, lump sum subscriptions and switch-in transactions for the Axis Gold Fund are being accepted without any restrictions from the same date.

Tata Mutual Fund also resumed direct subscription transactions by large investors, making investments of Rs 25 crore and above in the Tata Gold ETF, effective from August 21, 2026. Applications for lump sum purchases and switch-ins to the Tata Gold ETF Fund of Fund are now accepted without investment limit restrictions from the same date.

Why Were Subscriptions Halted

Earlier in June 2026, mutual fund houses halted subscriptions to restrict large capital inflows. HDFC Mutual Fund placed restrictions on June 4, followed by Axis Mutual Fund on June 5 and June 10, and Tata Mutual Fund from June 8.

Tata Mutual Fund restricted direct ETF investments of a minimum of Rs 25 crore and capped FoF lump sum purchases at Rs 10 lakh per PAN per calendar month. Axis Mutual Fund also introduced curbs on ETF subscriptions exceeding Rs 25 crore.

The restrictions were introduced to manage institutional inflows during market volatility. Following a hike in the physical gold import duty by the government aimed at mitigating the challenge of a trade deficit, investor demand shifted heavily toward Gold ETFs.

The surge in subscriptions forced mutual fund houses to source physical gold to back the new units during a period when the supply chain was constrained. To manage institutional inflows, fund houses placed temporary caps on large direct investments and on retail lump sum purchases.

As the bottlenecks eased and market conditions normalised, asset management companies have removed these temporary caps. Tata Mutual Fund has explicitly cited the normalisation of market conditions as the primary reason for this resumption.

“In view of the normalisation of market conditions, it has now been decided to resume subscription transactions by large investors directly with Tata Mutual Fund (i.e. investors making investment of Rs. 25 crores & above) in Tata Gold ETF. Additionally, applications for lump-sum purchases and switch-ins to the Tata Gold ETF FOF will now be accepted without any investment limit restrictions,” Tata Mutual Fund said.

What Does The Resumption Mean For Investors

Following the resumption, high-net-worth individuals and institutional investors who wish to deploy capital into Gold ETFs can do so without facing rejections.

Removing the Rs 25 crore cap threshold provides flexibility for large-scale capital allocation. On the other hand, for retail investors who wish to invest in Gold ETF FoFs, the removal of monthly investment caps means they can freely execute lump sum purchases. They no longer need to worry about hitting an artificial ceiling.
