Even as India gears up to celebrate its 80th Independence Day, financial independence remains a massive bridge that many households haven’t crossed. Being financially unaware or confused is part of the reason. One major reason is that many tend to equate financial preparedness with having large assets for investments or earning massively, which is not true.

Financial independence starts with having control over your money, being prepared for emergencies, and making your finances solid enough that they can survive any unexpected expenses.

Here’s a basic checklist to how every household in India can be financially prepared while having stability and security.

Build An Emergency Fund

An emergency fund is your financial safety net, built to protect you when life throws unexpected challenges your way. While preserving it for real emergencies is important, certain life events may necessitate using it nevertheless. An emergency fund may help you cover your living costs until you find new employment, or face any health problem that could otherwise leave you unemployed. Your financial security demands that you maintain between six and 12 months of savings to handle basic living costs. One should plan their six months of expenses and budget accordingly, while keeping some room to wiggle as well.

Review Your Monthly Budget

Independence begins when individuals are free from financial stress. One should always make sure that they are aware of where their money goes. Every Indian household should review their monthly financial outgo and divide spending into essential expenses, spending, and leaks. Small expenses, which are recurring in nature, can pile up and become huge if not taken care of early on.

Keep Debt Under Control

Debt can become a huge obstacle to financial independence, especially if it carries a high rate of interest. Credit card balances and loans should be given priority for repayment. Making a list of these and repaying them at the earliest can help in minimising debt and improving credit scores. At the same time, if one takes a second loan to repay a pre-existing one, it can also undo the effort of keeping debt under control.

Start Long-Term Investments

Once emergency funds and debt repayment is out of the way, households can focus on long term wealth creation. Depending on their financial goals and risk tolerance, they can consider several options such as Public Provident Fund (PPF), mutual funds, fixed deposits, National Pension System (NPS), and any other regulated investment products.

Says Abhishek Kumar, a Securities and Exchange Board of India-registered investment advisor (Sebi RIA) and founder at SahajMoney: “Consistent investing and periodic rebalancing of the portfolio can help in building long-term wealth. One can also automate investments through systematic investment plans (SIPs) in mutual funds, PPF, and NPS.”

Financial freedom does not translate to huge dramatic changes and huge investments that leave no room for basic lifestyle expenditure. The key is to build an emergency fund, control debt, and budget carefully to make household financially stronger.

“Achieving true financial independence starts with building a safety net of 6-12 months of emergency fund, buying a comprehensive health insurance plan, a term life insurance, and staying away from high interest debt like credit card or personal loan,” adds Kumar.
