Summary

Summary of this article

  • Stock markets remain closed on June 26 for Muharram.

  • Truncated trading weeks compress option time decay and amplify volatility.

  • BSE Sensex weekly contract expiry shifted to June 25.

The stock market is witnessing strong participation in the current week as investors are reacting to de-escalation efforts in West Asia and other key developments, such as volatility in Asian markets.

On the other hand, the primary market is also witnessing strong participation as the public issues of Advit Jewels, Turtlemint Fintech Solutions, CSM Technologies and Waterways Leisure Tourism witnessed active participation across investor categories.

Even as the primary market and secondary market witness strong participation, investors must note that the National Stock Exchange, Bombay Stock Exchange, and Multi-Commodity Exchange will remain closed on June 26.  The market will remain closed on account of the observance of Muharram according to the holiday calendar of the National Stock Exchange.

On June 26, no trading activity will take place in the primary market nor in the secondary market. This also means that the current week is a truncated trading week and has only four trading days as opposed to a regular trading week, which has five sessions.

Why Volatility Rises in a Truncated Week

Typically, volatility rises in truncated trading weeks on account of three converging factors. One of the key factors for the heightened volatility is that option traders have to deal with compressed time decay, which is also known as theta. Time decay in this context refers to the reduction in an option contract's value as it approaches its expiration date.

For options traders, truncated weeks lead to five days' worth of time decay getting compressed into four sessions, leading to more aggressive premium adjustments as the expiration date nears. Another factor behind the high volatility is that institutional investors, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs), and Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) get one day less to undertake block deals or roll over their derivative contracts; this concentrates high-volume trading activity into fewer hours and can lead to wide price swings.

Additionally, in a truncated week, global markets continue to trade while Indian markets are closed, thus when trading resumes on Monday, the market instantly prices in 48 to 72 hours of international macroeconomic developments, resulting in higher volatility.

Bombay Stock Exchange Expiry Adjustments

The BSE Sensex has its expiry on Friday. According to exchange rules, if a scheduled expiry day falls on a market holiday, the expiration is automatically postponed to the immediate preceding trading day. Therefore, any weekly contracts originally slated to expire on Friday, June 26, will settle on Thursday, June 25, at the regular market closing time.

Upcoming Market Holidays in 2026

Investors can expect a few more stock market holidays in the upcoming months of 2026. The market will remain closed on August 15 for Independence Day, followed by Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14.

In October, trading activity will be halted on two days: October 2 on account of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and on October 20 on account of Dussehra. In November, the market will close for Diwali Balipratipada on November 10 and Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev on November 24. However, a one-hour Muhurat Trading session will be conducted for Diwali Laxmi Pujan on Sunday, November 8. The last trading holiday of the year will be observed on December 25 for Christmas.

Key Factors Affecting Monday Trade

After remaining closed on Friday, the market will reopen for trading on Monday, June 29. Several factors are set to affect trade on Monday morning as investors factor in developments which have taken place over the long weekend. D-Street is expected to react to global cues from the trading activity of US and European markets on Friday, alongside any weekend developments in crude oil prices.
