Actor-activist Sonu Sood was the first Bollywood celebrity to organise transport services and send helpless, underprivileged migrants home. He was the first B-town celeb to organise buses for hundreds of migrants who were stuck in Mumbai amid a nationwide Covid lockdown. He had said that he would not rest till the last migrant reaches home. Sood made sure that the migrant labourers didn’t lose hope in humanity. He was selected as the No.1 celebrity in Asia by a UK magazine. Soon, Sood became a household name for extending a helping hand to migrant workers in reaching their villages and reuniting them with their families.

In a recent conversation with Outlook Money, Sood expressed his concern: “The pandemic may have come down, but the after-effect is huge.” There are still medical emergencies, people still don’t have jobs and there are many families that are unable to support their children’s education. The pandemic’s negative effects are here to stay.

“The money that has been collected is for long-term spending and not just the short term. Whether it is helping patients or helping children with their education, whatever course it is that they choose, including coaching for Civil Services, B.Tech and CA (chartered accountancy). So, this has to be sustainable forever. The idea is that whether Sonu Sood is there or not, the Sood Charity Foundation will continue to help people,” he says.

Talking about financial discipline, Sood adds, “I feel financial discipline is very important. When we were kids, my parents used to give us piggy banks so that we could save money. I feel the biggest lesson a parent can give to a child is how you save money, and that is how you learn to value money. Then you know that if you have to buy something, how much you should spend. That helps the child learn not only how much to save, but also teaches him or her how to be careful with money and to spend it wisely.”

“I had an upper middle-class upbringing. My parents were very hardworking. My mother was a professor and my dad was a businessman. They always taught us the value of money and how we should respect it. They taught us that whatever amount we earn, we should save some and spend some wisely. I follow in those footsteps and I also advise my kids to do the same.”

For Sood, money saved is money earned. He advises youngsters to spend less and invest wisely. “I would like to tell youngsters to never lose hope. Job cuts and salary cuts are a part of life. There is always something new that is waiting for you. Always remember, when one door closes, another opens. So just stay strong and give your best to whatever opportunity that comes your way; then nothing can stop you.”

Sood wants to build a hospital where treatment would be provided free of cost because he feels that is the need of the hour. “It’s not like you work for a month and if somebody comes for help on the 31st day, I have nothing to offer. Pandemic or no pandemic, I should be in a position to help them then as well!”
