Summary of this article

  • Central government employees receive September salaries early on September 25.

  • A nationwide bank strike is proposed from September 28.

  • Banks will also remain open on Sunday, September 27.

A three-day nationwide bank strike has been proposed from September 28 to September 30, which could disrupt banking transactions during the period. The proposed strike has also led the Central Government to issue instructions on when September salary, wages and pension payments can be made.

In an Office Memorandum dated September 23, the Ministry of Finance’s Department of Expenditure said the salary, wages and pension of Central Government employees and pensioners for September may be drawn and disbursed on September 25, Friday, ahead of the proposed strike.

Who Will Get the Salary Early?

The order covers Central Government employees, including those working in Defence, Posts and Telecommunications. The September wages of industrial employees of the Central Government may also be disbursed in advance on September 25. Central Government pensioners may also receive their September pension on September 25. The memorandum says this payment may be made through banks or Pay and Accounts Offices (PAOs).

The decision follows a September 21 memorandum from the Ministry of Finance’s Department of Financial Services, which said there was a likelihood of disruption in banking transactions during the proposed strike period.

The salary, wages or pension disbursed on September 25 will be treated as an advance payment. The amount will be subject to adjustment after the full month’s salary, wages or pension is determined. If any adjustment is required, it will be made from the salary or wages for October 2026.

Other Payments May Also Be Made Early

The government has also said that payments and other banking transactions scheduled towards the end of September may be processed in advance, wherever feasible.

The memorandum noted that the strike period coincides with the closing days of the current quarter. Processing such payments in advance is intended to avoid delays and disruptions. The concerned Ministries and Departments have been asked to bring these instructions to the notice of their offices for necessary action. The Reserve Bank of India has also been requested to communicate the instructions to all paying branches of banks.

Also, public sector banks (PSBs) and regional rural banks (RRBs) will remain open on Sunday, September 27, 2026, ahead of the proposed three-day nationwide bank strike from September 28 to September 30. This will allow customers to visit the branch for bank services before the strike begins.
