A consumer dispute over a defective air conditioner has resulted in a refund order along with compensation and litigation costs, after the buyer’s repeated complaints about inadequate cooling were found to be unresolved.

The case involves Fujitsu General India, where a customer alleged that a recently purchased air conditioner failed to deliver adequate cooling soon after installation, which led to continued dissatisfaction.

According to case details, Vaibhav Singh Bhadana purchased a 3-ton split air conditioner from an authorised dealer in February 2025 for Rs 1.14 lakh.

The issue came to light when the air conditioner was used for the first time in May last year during rising temperatures, but it failed to cool properly. This led to repeated service complaints in the following days, which included 5 calls on 18 May and 11 calls on 19 May, according to media reports.

During installation, the customer was told that standard wall mounting could not be done, which led to an additional cost of Rs 15,329 for a specially made stand.

A technician was later assigned to inspect the unit while the problem remained unresolved. The complainant also alleged improper handling of the product during inspection, which resulted in visible damage to the indoor unit. The technician reportedly attributed the issue to low gas levels but did not resolve the defect.

After further attempts to contact the service team did not yield any response, the complainant was informed that another visit would not be feasible. The matter was heard by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (East), Delhi.

Fujitsu General was served notice, but neither appeared before the commission nor filed any written response, which means the allegations remained unchallenged.

The commission held Fujitsu General India liable for deficiency in service and directed the company to refund the full purchase amount along with interest at 7 per cent per annum.

It also awarded Rs 25,000 as compensation and Rs 10,000 towards litigation costs, directing compliance within 30 days; if falling, then higher interest would apply.
