The crash, which took place close to the city's Meghaninagar region, reportedly caused the loss of 249 lives, comprising 241 passengers and crew members on board the plane. The rest of the casualties were people who were on ground when the accident occurred.

The on-ground victims comprised doctors, students, hospital staff, and people living around B J Medical College, which is located near the Ahmedabad airport and was greatly affected during the crash.

Apart from the compensation for the dead, the Tata Group also pledged to pay for the medical treatment of those injured during the accident. Air India Comes to the Rescue With Further Interim Payment

As per news report by The Indian Express, the Tata Group-owned Air India has declared an interim financial compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the families of the victims and to the crash's sole survivor. While issuing a statement, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson noted that the compensation is meant to offer instant assistance as the overall compensation process goes on.

"In addition to the Rs 1 crore," Wilson continued. The interim amount is approximately 21,000 GBP, whereas the Rs 1 crore compensation amount is approximately 85,000 GBP.

Additional Compensation From Insurance Companies

Besides the Tata Group's payout, relatives of the victims are likely to get around Rs 1.5 crore from insurance companies. The Air India insurance cover is dominated by Tata AIG Insurance, which has over 40 per cent of the risk. Other insurers are ICICI Lombard General Insurance, New India Assurance, and a few public sector insurance companies. Global reinsurer AIG will take care of the last insurance liability.

Further Assistance Could Be Sought Out

When The Indian Express asked if jobs or some other long-term assistance will be provided to the families of the victims, a Tata spokesperson said that no decision had been reached yet. "We are still assessing the situation, and investigation has begun," said the spokesperson.
