Honest driver returns device, highlighting UPI’s unexpected usefulness.
Viral Reddit post sparks discussion, with users sharing similar experiences.
Losing a phone is stressful, especially if it's misplaced during a busy day or left behind somewhere. A simple UPI payment can do more than just transfer money. It can also help in unexpected scenarios. One such occurrence occurred when a man's wife mistakenly left her phone on a battery-powered rickshaw. He later shared this experience in a Reddit post, explaining how a UPI payment helped them find the misplaced gadget.
In the Reddit post, the man detailed how he and his wife were out shopping on a battery rickshaw when she accidentally dropped her phone. They had no idea it had fallen, but he had paid the driver via UPI, which left a digital record of the transaction.
After some time, his wife realised the phone was missing. Since it didn't have a SIM card installed, calling it wasn't possible. "At first, we thought someone might have stolen it, but later, we also realised that she might have dropped the phone on the rickshaw. We finally came to terms with the fact that her phone is gone," he wrote.
With no contact information except the driver's UPI ID, they didn't know how to reach him and had almost accepted that the phone was gone. Later, as they were heading back home, the husband received an SMS showing 1 rupee credited to his bank account. It was from the driver, who had left his contact number along with the payment. The husband immediately called him, and the driver returned the phone. The couple rewarded him with some cash for his honesty.
Reflecting on the experience, the husband wrote, "It was UPI that brought my wife's phone back; there was no way he could have communicated with me if I had paid him in cash."
The post received over 100 comments and 2,800 upvotes. While one user wrote, "It's not the UPI, bro, it's the driver's righteousness," the story resonated with many others.
While one user shared a similar experience: "Same thing happened with me last month! I was travelling home with my backpack and laptop, exhausted after multiple connections. I realised my laptop was missing from the auto when I woke up. Panicked, I tried everything to find the driver's number but could only get his government name from his UPI ID and the last four digits of his phone."
He added that with little hope, he went to the police station, and they were able to find the driver within a couple of hours. He got everything back and, from that day on, promised himself that he would use UPI for most public transportation.
