Check coverage dates, exclusions, sub-limits, and claim documentation requirements
Short-term firecracker policies supplement but cannot replace regular health insurance
A firecracker policy covers only the incidents and expenses listed in its terms, and only during the dates shown on the policy.
The policy wording decides who is covered, what it pays, and how to claim.
The name can make firecracker insurance sound like broad protection against any injury during Diwali. It is not. These are short-term accident policies, and the cover applies only to events and benefits listed in the policy.
The policy may cover one person or several members of a family. Age limits and other eligibility rules vary. Some plans reimburse eligible medical expenses; others pay a fixed amount if a specified event, such as accidental death or permanent disability, occurs.
“The reimbursement is subject to the amount of eligible expenses and limits specified in the policy, unlike the fixed benefits that depend on the occurrence of the specified event that has to happen,” says Arun Ramamurthy, co-founder, Staywell.health.
That distinction matters when comparing plans. A reimbursement benefit is tied to the expenses the insurer accepts, within the policy limit. A fixed benefit is tied to the event: it pays the stated amount if the policy’s conditions are met. Neither should be assumed to cover every firecracker-related injury. Outpatient treatment, for example, may not be included.
Check The Dates, Limits And Exclusions
Before paying the premium, check the sum insured and any sub-limit on hospitalisation. Make sure the policy period includes the days you want covered. Read how the insurer defines an accident and check the exclusions. These can apply to intoxication, unlawful or intentional acts, pre-existing conditions, or the circumstances of the incident; the wording varies by plan.
“Consumers should also check for exclusions relating to intoxication, intentional or unlawful acts, and pre-existing medical conditions, where applicable, as well as any restrictions on the circumstances in which an accident is covered,” says Ramamurthy.
Find out how soon you must notify the insurer or claims administrator. Keep the policy details, claim form, prescriptions, treatment reports and original hospital bills. The insurer may ask for identity and bank account documents. A claim after an accidental death may also need a death certificate and police investigation reports.
Save the papers you send and any messages from the insurer. It will check what happened and whether the policy covers the claim.
Extra Cover, Not A Health Policy
A firecracker policy covers specified accidental injuries or losses for a defined period. Health insurance can cover eligible treatment for illnesses and accidents through the year, subject to its exclusions, waiting periods, and sum insured. Personal accident insurance generally pays specified benefits for events such as accidental death or disability; some plans include temporary disability.
The short-term policy may sit alongside these covers, but it does not replace them. If two policies cover medical expenses, do not assume both will reimburse the full bill. With reimbursement cover, the insurer pays eligible bills up to the policy limit. A fixed-benefit plan pays the stated amount if the listed event occurs.
Check existing policies first. If they already provide the protection you need, a Diwali policy may add little. If you do buy one, compare its premium with the benefits, limits, and claim conditions, and confirm the exact dates of cover.
