  • One of the most important inclusions is adventure activities cover, particularly for those seeking experiences like scuba diving, skydiving, or bungee jumping.

  • Trip delay or trip extension insurance can cover extra food and hotel bills if your flight is cancelled because of unexpected weather or mechanical failure.

Travelling solo is becoming mainstream among Indians. Whether driven by the freedom of a personalized itinerary or the hassle of coordinating group schedules, a massive wave of travellers is booking single tickets. This behavioural shift is visible in the numbers. According to Digit Insurance, in FY25-26, solo travellers now account for 55-60 per cent of total international travel policies sold.

“When planning a trip, solo travellers should carefully evaluate travel insurance coverages that address both medical risks and practical uncertainties they may face. One of the most important inclusions is adventure activities cover, particularly for those seeking experiences like scuba diving, skydiving, or bungee jumping. These activities carry higher risks, and unexpected injuries can lead to substantial medical bills, often running into lakhs,” says Vivek Chaturvedi, CMO and Head of Direct Sales, Go Digit General Insurance.

A compassionate visit cover ensures that if the policyholder is hospitalized, the cost of bringing a trusted family member for support is covered, helping both emotionally and financially during a stressful time.

Coverage for delay or loss of checked-in baggage is also something you must look for in travel insurance. Losing your baggage can be particularly frustrating when travelling alone. You might not be able to borrow from a friend or family member either. Additionally, your luggage could contain important items such as prescriptions, official documents and valuables which you cannot buy locally. Insured travellers will receive a predetermined cash amount for lost belongings. Make sure you know what documentation you will need and what is excluded when it comes to valuables like jewellery.

Trip delay or trip extension insurance can cover extra food and hotel bills if your flight is cancelled because of unexpected weather or mechanical failure. If your flight gets cancelled, you’ll likely be at the airport for longer waiting periods. That’s where trip delay coverage will help with a predetermined payout so you can comfortably wait as a solo traveller.

Common carrier or flight delay insurance also provides a cash payout if your flight gets delayed.

“In case your cash and cards are stolen, emergency cash card is an important benefit to look for. When travelling solo, it can be extremely uncomfortable to be stranded without money in your pocket in a foreign country. Emergency cash card contacts you and sends cash almost immediately,” adds Chaturvedi.

The last type of travel insurance coverage that could be very useful for solo travellers is loss of passport coverage. If your passport gets stolen or lost overseas, you’ll have to go through multiple procedures, documentation and payments to get a duplicate. Passport cover can pay you back for the costs of getting duplicate documents.

Cover for all these incidents allows you to have peace of mind when travelling alone, and feel confident that you can deal with these unexpected events.
