Freedom depends on personal priorities and life choices.
In today's fast-paced world, there are several definitions of what freedom means to people. Earlier, people struggled to maintain a good work-life balance; now, some are going back to working ruthlessly for a short period of time and retiring early, a concept famously known as FIRE. FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. Both concepts offer people freedom, albeit their paths are different. While work-life balance seeks harmony between personal life and career, FIRE is focused on long-term freedom and building extreme discipline in saving money that will pay off later.
What Is Work-Life Balance?
Work-life balance is about establishing an equilibrium, where professional expectations and responsibilities do not overwhelm you and make you compromise your personal life. It does not promote working less or slacking; it is about working smarter. People who vouch for this lifestyle emphasise flexibility, mental health, and time for relationships, hobbies, and rejuvenation. Work-life balance has assumed greater public consciousness with the evolution of a hybrid or a remote working environment, where you get more time for yourself which you typically do not get if you have to commute to office daily for your work.
Those who believe in this concept see freedom as a daily necessity, the ability to choose when, where and how they work without sacrificing happiness. They understand that working until burnout is counter-productive and hence they prioritise time, well-being, and breaks just as much. Many Gen Z are prioritising work-life balance over other factors such as pay and career growth.
Says Col. Sanjeev Govila (Retd), CEO, Hum Fauji Initiatives, a financial planning firm: “FIRE is an ideal goal; what we need to understand is three main things. First, is this actually a practical possibility or just a hyped-up concept people are trying to follow. Secondly, FIRE comes with a lot of time in your later years, what plans do you have for then? If you haven’t planned anything, then this is not for you. Third, is there actually a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow? Or can you find the rainbow even now by balancing work and life in a healthy manner.”
The Real Definition of Freedom
The definition of freedom is defined by the priorities people have. Work-life balance may suit some, and FIRE could be working for others. Believers of the former feel that the true essence of life lies in the present, while believers of the latter want to work today so that they have complete freedom later in their life.
Whatever you choose, you can't let money dictate how you make every move in your life. Save wisely while living life fully.
Adds Govila: “Personally, I don’t think freedom is about just having time and money with you. It is also about having the freedom to make tough choices. Life is uncertain and you don’t know what can happen tomorrow. Real freedom lies in the healthy balance of time, money and total control over choices.”
