EPFO Allows Online Update Of Date Of Exit Without Employer Approval, EPF Subscribers Say System Still Sluggish

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has allowed online updation of the date of exit by EPF subscribers in the EPFO records through the organisation’s official portal. An employee’s date of exit from an organisation is crucial for transferring funds from the previous employer to the new employer.

Previously, updating the date of exit and joining, and other personal details required the employer’s approval. In January 2025, EPFO made the process easier by permitting EPF members to update their personal details by themselves online if their Universal Account Number (UAN) had been issued before October 1, 2017, and if the same was validated through Aadhaar.

So, if an employer has not updated the exit date details of an employee within 60 days after the employee has left or has wrongly updated it, employees can correct it themselves. EPFO implemented this option to provide convenience to the EPF members; however, it seems that the facility is not working as promised.

What EPF Members Say

Recently, several EPF members have expressed their dissatisfaction with the online updation facility related to the date of exit.

A user named Puneet Heera wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “It took almost seven months for me to get it resolved. Hopefully, now the system must have been updated for fast resolution. Else don’t trust as they still didn’t update the actual time line of resolution.”

Another user, Swapnil P Patil, wrote, “I applied to change DOE, and my employer approved as well; but it is pending from Malad Kandiwali office for approval. Also, I didn't get interest for the last 2 years. The EPF transfer also got rejected. What is happening in EPFO?”

The sluggish resolution of EPFO complaints is an old issue, primarily pertaining to its old processes and outdated IT infrastructure. While efforts are on to make the services better, processes streamlined, and member-friendly, there is a lot to be done.

The frustration reflects in the EPF members’ messages. Venkatesh Govindan, another user, wrote on X: “Instead of spending on such useless advertisements, please spend some more money in the EPF member portal to provide better services to the users. Most of the time claims are getting rejected; employees who are leaving the organisation, for them, their PF are not getting transferred.”

How To Update Your Date Of Exit Online On The EPFO Portal?

  • Visit the EPFO’s Member Unified Portal

  • Enter your UAN, password, and Captcha code

  • Click ‘Mark Exit’ in the Manage tab

  • Select ‘PF Account Number’ from the ‘Select Employment’ drop-down

  • Enter the exit date and reason for exit, and click ‘Request OTP’

  • Enter the OTP and tick the checkbox to give consent

  • Click ‘Update’ and ‘OK’

According to the EPFO website, the date of exit can be any date in the month in which the last contribution was made by the previous employer, and once the date of exit is updated, it cannot be changed.
