EPF Claim Settlement: Why EPFO Rejects The Claims And What Subscribers Can Do

When will my EPF claim be processed? What is the status of my complaint? My KYC is complete, yet my claim is still pending. These are the messages the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) subscribers keep posting on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). EPFO’s services have long been in question for being unsupportive. Earlier, the old IT infrastructure was the reason for slow online services, which has been upgraded, yet the subscribers face issues.

When parliamentarian Asaduddin Owaisi asked “whether the Government is aware that the downtime for the Employees Provident Fund Organisation's (EPFO) website is very high, thereby causing difficulties in accessing online services, and why the claim rejection rate is so high, in the Lok Sabha on March 9, 2026, here is what the government replied.

Common Reasons For Claim Rejection

Shobha Karandlaje, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, gave a written reply, explaining the common reasons for claim rejection. To the technical issues in the online services, the minister replied that a diagnostic study has been conducted and measures have been taken, such as the installation of new servers and storage systems, increasing the equipment capacity to handle higher loads, and setting up new routers and switches to improve the speed and performance. Besides shifting the core applications to the upgraded systems, an enhanced security system has been put in place, and a dedicated team has been deployed to run the operations.

The minister highlighted that while the digital system has been upgraded, the delay is due to claim rejection. The claims are commonly rejected due to incomplete details, incorrect claim form, mismatch in date of birth, exit date, Aadhaar details, bank details, among others, or non-submission of the required documents, such as death certificate, legal heir certificate, etc. Sometimes, there are contribution-related discrepancies as well.

What Can Subscribers Do?

While subscribers need to be careful about writing correct and complete details, EPFO should not delay it unnecessarily.

According to the minister, subscribers should fill out the e-nomination and family details online to avoid delay or claim rejection. Once the details are correctly filled out and the requisite documents are attached, the claim is paid within 20 days. However, in case of missing details of documents, it can be rejected.

Grievance Portals

The formal portals to raise grievances with the EPFO are the Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) and EPF i-Grievance Management System (EPFiGMS).

Notably, between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2025, CPGRAMS received a total of 2,33,052 complaints and disposed of 2,28,461 (98 per cent) complaints.

During the same period, EPFiGMS received 17,54,297 complaints and disposed of 17,20,489 (98 per cent) complaints.
