Banks throughout India will be closed on nine days in August 2025 due to a mix of national holidays and religious celebrations. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued the list of holidays under three categories: Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement Holiday, and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.

These holidays are not uniform across the country, as several are state-specific. Customers are, therefore, advised to confirm dates with their local branches to avoid inconvenience.

State-Wise Holidays Begin Early in the Month

The first holiday in August falls on August 8, when banks will remain closed in Odisha and Sikkim. Odisha will observe Jhulan Purnima, while Sikkim will mark Tendong Lho Rum Faat. The next day, August 9 is Raksha Bandhan, because of which banks will observe holiday in a number of states including Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Banks will also remain shut in Union Territories, such as Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.

Mid-Month Holidays Include Independence Day and Janmashtami

On August 13, banks in Manipur will remain closed due to Patriots Day, a local observance. On August 15, banks across the country will be closed on account of Independence Day. The next day, August 16, is Janmashtami, a festival celebrated in many states, during which banks will remain closed in those regions. The same day also marks the Parsi New Year. As such, banks in Maharashtra, Gujarat and a select few other areas will also observe holiday.

Scattered Holidays Towards the End of August

Banks in certain states will also remain closed on August 19 and 25 due to local festivals in these states. These holidays have been announced only for some regions and are not expected to impact all states.

Ganesh Chaturthi to Cause Closures in Multiple States

One of the biggest festivals of the month, Ganesh Chaturthi, is on August 27. As such, banks in several states, such as Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu and Telangana will remain closed. On August 28, the second day of the celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi, banks in Goa and Gujarat will remain closed. The same day, Odisha, Punjab and Sikkim will be celebrating Nuakhai, also leading to bank holidays in these states.

Customer Advisory

Customers intending to go to banks for crucial transactions have been advised to check the holiday list and schedule their activities accordingly. Although online banking services will continue uninterrupted, physical banking will not be available on the specified dates in these states.
