  • ChatGPT now supports bank account linking through Plaid integration

  • Users can analyse spending, investments, subscriptions, and payment activity

  • Finance tools currently available for US ChatGPT Pro subscribers

OpenAI has rolled out a new finance tool within ChatGPT, where users can link bank accounts and access financial information through conversational prompts. The feature is currently available in preview mode for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States on web and iOS platforms.

These new tools let users monitor expenses, track investments, follow subscriptions, and see upcoming payments--all within ChatGPT. Users can ask questions about spending habits, repeated charges, investment results and long-term planning.

According to OpenAI, users can ask natural-language questions such as whether their monthly expenses have increased recently or whether they may be financially prepared for future goals like purchasing a house. The chatbot then generates responses using information available from linked financial accounts.

Partnerships Support Integration

To support bank account integration, OpenAI has partnered with Plaid, a financial data network that connects applications with banks and financial institutions. This integration has partnered with more than 12,000 institutions.

The supported institutions include JPMorgan Chase, Fidelity Investments, Charles Schwab, Robinhood, American Express, and Capital One.

Users can access the feature through a dedicated “Finances” section inside ChatGPT or by entering prompts requesting account connection. ChatGPT then guides users through the linking process using Plaid’s authentication system.

Once bank accounts are linked, ChatGPT is then able to present data on spending activity, portfolio performance, active subscriptions, recurring payments, and so on. Users can also ask follow-up questions based on their account activity and payment patterns, displayed on the dashboard.

The feature currently supports financial data analysis through conversational interactions instead of direct financial transactions. Users cannot transfer money or make payments through ChatGPT at this stage.

GPT-5.5 Model Used For Financial Queries

The finance tools linked to ChatGPT are powered by its GPT-5.5 model, which has been trained for contextual reasoning and finance-related analysis. According to OpenAI, finance specialists were involved in testing and benchmarking the system for personal finance-related use cases.

The rollout comes after OpenAI acquired the team behind Hiro, a startup focused on AI-based financial management tools. While OpenAI did not confirm whether the Hiro team directly developed the feature, it only said that the team contributed expertise to the project.

OpenAI stated that users already ask ChatGPT finance-related questions related to budgeting, investments, taxes, savings, and debt management. The new feature is aimed at organising this information within a dedicated finance section.

Controls And Data Removal

According to OpenAI, users can disconnect their linked accounts at any time through the settings menu. The company added that synced financial data will be deleted from ChatGPT within 30 days after account disconnection.

Users can also review and delete financial “memories” stored by the chatbot. OpenAI said more than 200 million users already ask ChatGPT finance-related questions every month.

At present, the finance tools are limited to ChatGPT Pro users in the US on web and iOS platforms. OpenAI plans to expand availability after reviewing feedback from beta users.
