RBI MPC Meeting Expectations

SBI Research also expects a 25-basis-point repo rate hike in October, followed by another increase in December. Its assessment points to rising inflation risks, challenging global conditions and changes in liquidity conditions.

The current repo rate stands at 5.25 per cent. A 25-basis-point increase at the October meeting would take it to 5.50 per cent.

RBI Repo Rate Changes In Recent Years

The RBI has made multiple changes to the repo rate over the past few years as the MPC responded to inflation and changing economic conditions. In May 2022, the RBI raised the repo rate by 40 basis points to 4.40 per cent. It followed this with a 50-basis-point increase in June, taking the rate to 4.90 per cent.

The MPC raised the rate by another 50 basis points in August 2022 to 5.40 per cent. In September, it increased the rate by 50 basis points again to 5.90 per cent. The December 2022 meeting brought another 35-basis-point increase, taking the repo rate to 6.25 per cent. The MPC then raised it by 25 basis points in February 2023 to 6.50 per cent.

The repo rate stayed at 6.50 per cent for an extended period before the RBI began cutting rates in 2025. The current repo rate stands at 5.25 per cent.
