Summary of this article
SBI Card will levy a 1 per cent fee on eligible high-value transactions.
Transport payments above Rs 30,000 per transaction will attract extra charges.
Fuel spending above Rs 50,000 per billing cycle will incur fees.
SBI Card will introduce additional charges on high-value fuel and transportation payments from December 1, 2026. The revised fee structure, specified in an official notification issued on October 27, will apply to all SBI credit card variants.
The fee will be calculated differently for the two categories. Transportation payments will attract a charge based on the value of each individual transaction, while fuel-related charges will depend on the total amount spent during a billing cycle.
New Fee On Transport Payments Above Rs 30,000
Under the revised rules, SBI Card will levy a 1 per cent fee on a single transportation transaction exceeding Rs 30,000. Payments of Rs 30,000 or below will not attract this charge.
The fee will apply to transactions classified under Merchant Category Codes (MCCs) 4111, 4784 and 4131. These codes cover commuter transport, toll and bridge fees, and bus services.
For example, a payment of Rs 35,000 for a covered transportation service will attract a fee of Rs 350, excluding applicable taxes. The threshold applies to each transaction separately, rather than the combined value of transportation payments during a billing cycle.
Multiple transactions below the specified limit will not attract the fee under this rule, even if their combined value exceeds Rs 30,000.
Additional Fee On Specific Fuel Spending
For fuel purchases, SBI Card will calculate the charge using total spending during a billing cycle. If the amount exceeds Rs 50,000, a 1 per cent fee will apply to the entire eligible fuel spend, rather than only the portion above the threshold.
For example, a cardholder who spends Rs 60,000 on fuel in one billing cycle will incur a fee of Rs 600, excluding applicable taxes. Fuel spending of Rs 50,000 or less will not attract this charge.
Clarification On Merchant Category Codes
SBI Card has also clarified that merchant category codes are assigned by network partners and may change. The code attached to a payment will therefore determine whether it falls within the categories covered by the revised charges.
The new fee structure will come into effect on December 1, 2026.
