United Payments Interface (UPI) has become a major part of India’s digital payments ecosystem, which allows people to make payments directly from their bank accounts using mobile phones. The platform is used for everyday purchases, bill payments, online payments, and money transfers.

UPI processed 24.07 billion transactions worth Rs 29.37 lakh crore in September 2026, according to data shared by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on its X handle, formerly Twitter. Transaction volume grew 23 per cent year-on-year, while transaction value increased 18 per cent.

UPI Records 802 Million Daily Transactions In September

UPI processed an average of 802 million transactions per day in September, with the average daily transaction value standing at Rs 97,913 crore. The September monthly transaction count was lower than August, when UPI processed 24.51 billion transactions worth Rs 29.82 lakh crore. However, August had 31 days compared with 30 days in September.

The average daily transaction count increased from 791 million in August to 802 million in September, while the average daily transaction value rose from Rs 96,205 crore to Rs 97,913 crore.

UPI Transaction Activity In July And August

UPI processed 23.66 billion transactions worth Rs 29.88 lakh crore in July 2026. Transaction activity remained above 23 billion transactions in each month from July to September. The September transaction count was higher than in July, while the monthly transaction value was lower.

What Changes For UPI Transactions In October?

From October 15, a 0.4 per cent Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) will apply to specified person-to-merchant UPI transactions above Rs 2,000. The MDR will be capped at Rs 300 per transaction for payments of Rs 75,000 and above.

The charge will apply within the merchant payment ecosystem, while customers will not be required to pay MDR. Payments up to Rs 2,000 will remain free, while small merchants receiving up to Rs 1 lakh a month through UPI QR codes under the specified category will continue to be exempt. The government has said around 96 per cent of merchant transactions will remain unaffected by the new framework.
