Summary of this article

  • Fintech uses technology to deliver and manage financial services.

  • UPI, digital lending and investments are common fintech applications.

  • GFF 2026 focuses on AI, tokenisation and quantum technology.

A payment made through a mobile phone, a loan application submitted online, or an investment managed through an app may all involve financial technology, or fintech. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has also in a recent post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, highlighted how technology is changing access to banking services and transactions.

The post pointed to shorter waiting times and easier access to routine financial services. However, fintech covers much more than faster banking.

What Does Fintech Mean

Fintech is a portmanteau which combines two words: finance and technology. It refers to technology used to provide, manage or support financial services.

Fintech includes digital payments, banking, lending, insurance, investments and financial data services. The technology can be part of a customer-facing app or operate in the background of a financial institution. For instance, when a customer transfers money through Unified Payments Interface (UPI), checks a bank account through a mobile app, or applies for a loan online, technology is being used to carry out the financial services.

How is Fintech Used

Payments are one of the most visible areas of fintech. UPI allows people to transfer money and make payments using their mobile phones.

Banking is another major area. Customers can use mobile and Netbanking to check balances, transfer money, pay bills as well as access other services without visiting a branch. In lending, technology is used for online loan applications, document collection, credit assessment and other parts of the lending process.

Fintech is also used for investments and insurance. Digital platforms allow users to access investment products, track their holdings, buy insurance policies and manage related services online.

Is Fintech Only About Apps

No. Not all fintech is visible to customers.

Financial institutions also use technology to process transactions, verify customers, analyse financial information, monitor transactions and identify possible fraud.

This means fintech can operate behind a service even when a customer does not directly interact with a fintech platform.

Why Is Fintech In Focus At GFF 2026

Fintech is at the heart of Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026, being held in Mumbai from September 8-11, 2026.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the event on September 8. The discussions at this year’s GFF include agentic artificial intelligence (AI), tokenisation, and quantum technology, along with developments in financial services.

The focus this year is on the range of technologies related to finance, beyond digital payments and mobile banking.

What Should Customers Know About Fintech

For consumers, fintech can be found in many routine financial activities. A payment, bank transfer, loan application, insurance purchase or investment transaction can involve technology at one or more stages.

At the same time, digital financial services involve personal and financial information. Customers need to check the service provider, understand applicable charges, and keep passwords, PINs and other authentication details secure.
