Also known as weight loss surgery, bariatric surgery is a procedure that modifies the digestive system to help individuals lose weight and improve obesity-related issues. A person had to shell out Rs 3.5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh for bariatric surgery.  However, according to the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India’s (Irdai) mandate, from 2019 most health insurance plans cover the cost of bariatric surgery.

Conditions For Surgery

“To avail of this weight loss surgery, the individual should be 18 years or above and up to 65 years old. They must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher. If the BMI is between 35 and 40 and the patient has comorbidities such as diabetes, heart disease, or stroke, the policyholder is still eligible to receive coverage for bariatric surgery,” says Siddharth Singhal, business head - health insurance.

The waiting period for bariatric surgery is at least 30 days. If the policyholder has any pre-existing ailment, then the waiting period might range anywhere between two to four years depending on the insurer.

For patients, the coverage for bariatric procedures provides access to surgery with a lower financial burden and good quality of life.  Individuals with co-morbidities such as diabetes, heart disease, etc. can enjoy a healthy life. Moreover, healthcare providers are witnessing increased patient volume and more demand for bariatric procedures.

“There are no hidden costs or post-surgery expenses. The post-hospitalisation charges are covered up to 180 days in many of the health insurance plans.  So, if an individual is requiring any post-hospitalisation consultation, diagnostic tests, etc. that is also covered by the insurance company,” says Singhal.

Keep In Mind

Policyholders should be aware of loss of work income as recovery can take weeks. Additionally, lifelong need for nutritional supplements, vitamins, and minerals & lifestyle changes like gym memberships, personal trainers, etc. can add to expenses.

It is important that before the surgery you share health concerns with your doctor. This will help you evaluate potential risks. It is also recommended that you make this decision only after discussing it with your family members. You will need their support during the surgery and also throughout the recovery period.
