Losing access to cryptocurrency can mean losing access to an asset that may appreciate significantly over time. Unlike traditional bank accounts, crypto holdings depend on access to wallets, exchanges and private keys, making account recovery especially important when a platform shuts down or access details are lost.

One British investor experienced this first-hand after losing access to a Bitcoin wallet worth around £4,000 in 2014. Chris, who has chosen to remain anonymous, eventually recovered the cryptocurrency earlier this year, with the holdings now valued at around £3.30 million (around Rs 42 crore), according to a report in Leading Britain’s Conversation.

How Chris Lost Access To His Bitcoin Wallet

Chris first invested in Bitcoin in 2011 after a friend encouraged him to consider the cryptocurrency as a long-term investment. He cautiously put around £1,500 into Bitcoin at a time when one Bitcoin was worth about £2.94. According to the report, he purchased the cryptocurrency through Britcoin, an early UK-based Bitcoin exchange that was later renamed Intersango. The platform attracted thousands of users, but began facing difficulties before eventually going offline in early 2014.

By then, the value of Chris’s Bitcoin had increased to around £4,000. However, when he tried to access his account and withdraw the cryptocurrency, he found that it had been frozen. His attempts to contact the platform did not work for the recovery of his holdings.

Over the years, Chris watched Bitcoin’s value rise, but eventually stopped following its price after believing that his holdings were permanently lost.

How He Recovered The Lost Bitcoins

Chris got another opportunity to recover his cryptocurrency earlier this year after his wife encouraged him to seek professional help. He approached CEL Solicitors, which worked to establish that the Bitcoin belonged to him. Lawyers gathered documents to establish his ownership of the Bitcoin and also handled the required court documents in the US before negotiating the recovery.

The cryptocurrency is now held on a platform regulated by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and is worth around £3.30 million. The report said that Chris still checks his account regularly and remains concerned about the risks of scams and hacking despite having recovered the assets.

What Chris Plans To Do With The Money

Chris plans to retain some of the Bitcoin while selling a part of his holdings. One of his main plans is to use the money to upgrade to a bigger house, thus allowing his family to better accommodate his mother-in-law. After spending years believing the cryptocurrency was gone forever, now he also plans to celebrate the recovery with his family as well as take a holiday.
