MHADA to launch Mumbai housing lottery soon.
Around 2,500 affordable homes to be offered.
Scheme targets multiple income groups across MMR.
The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is all set to conduct another one of its housing lottery schemes in Mumbai within the next 10 days. Under this scheme, it is expected to offer 2,500 affordable homes. This is in the continued efforts to improve homeownership in one of India’s most expensive and dense real estate markets.
In the lottery held in February, a total of 4,000 units were allotted in Pune. The authority had received an overwhelming number of applications for a limited number of offerings in the previous lottery. MHADA has offered more than 25,000 affordable homes for sale in the past two-and-a-half years. The extensive response to the recent Pune lottery highlights the scale of demand across Maharashtra.
As per a report by Hindustan Times, Milind Borikar, CEO, MHADA's Mumbai Board, has revealed that MHADA is going to announce a lottery of 2,500 affordable homes in Mumbai within 10 days. In addition to this, the homes will be distributed across the different income groups, which include economically weaker sections (EWS), low-income groups (LIG), middle-income groups (MIG) and high-income groups (HIG). This format ensures that a wide range of homebuyers can benefit from this scheme, especially those who are seeking budget homes.
Borikar confirmed that preparations for the lottery are in the final stages of formulation, with the draw to be announced and expected to roll out soon. The announcement has generated considerable interest among the prospective and aspirational homebuyers. This is due to Mumbai’s persistent housing and housing affordability challenges in the private market.
The same report mentions that the scheme offers housing options in various parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), which enables buyers multiple location options across the region. MHADA’s projects are typically priced much lower than the sustained market rates in private projects. This also makes these schemes attractive to desperate and first-time home buyers.
Effect on Homebuyers
This upcoming lottery in March provides a fresh opportunity for families who were unable to secure homes in the previous draw, where the demand had far exceeded the supply. MHADA’s continued effort to roll out housing schemes indicates the long-term strategy to increase the opportunities in the affordable housing inventory. In addition to being a helping hand in converting homebuyers' dreams into successful homeownership, MHADA plays a crucial role in urban development by redeveloping old buildings and improving the living conditions for many families.
MHADA has advised homebuyers wanting to take part in the draw to track the updates shared by the authority to ensure a faster and safer approach to homebuying.
