The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the premature redemption price for the 2020-21 Series VII tranche of the sovereign gold bond (SGB) scheme. Notably, the tranche was issued on October 20, 2020. The RBI has notified October 19, 2026, as the premature redemption date.
SGB 2020-21 Series VII Premature Redemption Date
RBI’s norms for SGBs allow premature redemption after the fifth year from the date of issue, on the date on which the semi-annual interest is payable. The premature redemption window allows investors holding SGBs to redeem their holdings directly with the central bank prior to the completion of the full eight-year maturity period.
What Is The Premature Redemption Price & Total Return?
According to RBI’s notification, investors can prematurely redeem their SGB 2020-21 Series VII holdings at a price of Rs 14,614 per unit.
“Accordingly, the redemption price for premature redemption due on October 19, 2026 (October 20, 2026, being a holiday), shall be Rs 14,614/- (Rupees Fourteen Thousand Six Hundred and Fourteen Only) per unit of SGB based on the simple average of closing price of gold for the three business days i.e., October 14, October 15, and October 16, 2026,” the RBI stated.
The SGB 2020-21 Series VII was issued at Rs 5,051 for offline investors and at Rs 5,001 for online investors who received a Rs 50 discount per gram.
Online investors are set to make an absolute capital gain of Rs 9,613 per unit, translating to an absolute return of approximately 192.22 per cent. Offline investors will make an absolute capital gain of Rs 9,563 per unit, translating to an absolute return of approximately 189.33 per cent.
How The Actual Redemption Price Was Calculated
The premature redemption price for SGBs is benchmarked against the simple average of the closing gold prices (999 purity) published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) over the three business days preceding the redemption due date.
For SGB 2020-21 Series VII, the closing rates published by the IBJA for 10 grams of 999 purity gold were Rs 1,46,345 on October 14, 2026, Rs 1,45,564 on October 15, 2026, and Rs 1,46,514 on October 16, 2026.
In addition to capital appreciation, investors received a fixed interest of 2.50 per cent per annum on the nominal value credited semi-annually into their bank accounts.
Understanding The Early Redemption Process
Investors can prematurely redeem their SGBs by submitting a request through the bank, post office, or designated receiving office where the bond was originally bought. The application has to be tendered between 30 days and 10 days before the interest payout date. After verification, the redemption proceeds and the final interest tranche are credited to the investor's linked bank account.
Gold's Stellar Run In 2026: Why You Shouldn't Over-Allocate
Gold has witnessed a stellar run throughout 2026, delivering triple-digit gains for medium-term bondholders and pushing bullion prices to record high levels. However, financial advisors caution against over-allocating capital to the yellow metal. Gold should be treated as a portfolio hedge rather than an aggressive growth engine with experts advising to invest up to 10 to 15 per cent in gold.
