Summary of this article
Commercial LPG cylinder prices rise Rs 993 in May
Total increase reaches Rs 1,303 over three months
Domestic LPG prices remain unchanged despite global surge
Commercial LPG cylinder prices saw a sharp increase on May 1, marking the third consecutive monthly hike. The price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder has been raised by Rs 993, taking the rate in Delhi to Rs 3,071.50 from Rs 2,078.50 earlier.
This is the steepest single-month increase in recent months. The latest revision follows earlier hikes of Rs 195.50 on April 1 and Rs 114.50 on March 1. With this, the cumulative increase over the past three months stands at Rs 1,303 per cylinder.
The hike affects businesses including hotels, restaurants and caterers which use commercial LPG cylinders for their operations.
No Change in Domestic LPG Prices
Although commercial LPG prices have risen significantly, domestic LPG rates remain unchanged. The 14.2-kg cylinder used in households continues to be priced at Rs 913 in Delhi.
Domestic LPG rates were last increased on March 7, when prices were raised by Rs 60 per cylinder. Since then, there has been no change, offering some relief to household consumers.
Global Factors Driving The Price Rise
LPG and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices are revised on the first day of every month by state-run oil marketing companies. These revisions are based on global energy benchmarks and currency exchange rate movements.
Global crude oil prices have surged nearly 50 per cent in recent weeks. The increase is linked to supply disruptions caused by the ongoing West Asia conflicts and issues in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy shipments.
The rise in international prices has directly affected commercial LPG rates in the domestic market.
Petrol And Diesel Prices Stable
While LPG prices have increased, petrol and diesel rates have remained unchanged. Following a cut of Rs 2 per litre in March last year, petrol is currently priced at Rs 94.72 per litre and diesel at Rs 87.62 per litre in Delhi.
There has been no fresh revision in auto fuel prices despite fluctuations in global crude oil rates.
City-Wise Commercial LPG Prices
According to the latest data, prices of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder across major cities are as follows:
New Delhi at Rs 3,071.50, Mumbai at Rs 3,046.50, Pune at Rs 3,107, Kolkata at Rs 3,355, Bengaluru at Rs 3,174.50, Chennai at Rs 3,259.50, Patna at Rs 3,369, Surat at Rs 3,047, Hyderabad at Rs 2,343.50, Indore at Rs 3,201.50, Lucknow at Rs 3,194, and Varanasi at Rs 3,276.50.
Prices may vary slightly depending on local distribution costs.
Limited Impact On Overall Consumption
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) stated that the price revision affects only a small segment of consumers. Commercial and bulk LPG cylinders account for less than 1 per cent of total LPG consumption.
The company added that domestic LPG prices for around 33 crore consumers remain unchanged. It also noted that nearly 80 per cent of petroleum products have not seen any price revision.
