Delhi Chief Minister and Finance Minister Rekha Gupta allocated monthly cash assistance worth Rs 2,500 for eligible women under a Rs 5,100 crore allocation, during the tabling of the budget for FY26, on March 25.
Meanwhile, Rs 1,000 crore was earmarked to strengthen transport links within Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). The government announced its plan to introduce a ‘common pass’ for women using public buses.
Gupta laid out a budget of Rs 1 lakh crore. This marked an increase of 31.5 per cent from the previous fiscal year, as per media reports.
The government will put in Rs 50,000 CCTV cameras in an attempt to make the national capital a safer place for women.
Additionally, Rs 696 crore was assigned for slum cluster development, along with Rs 100 crore for establishing 100 Atal Canteens to provide subsidised meals for the underprivileged.
Gupta called it a “historic Budget,” asserting that the BJP government had moved past an era of “corruption and inefficiency.” She announced that capital expenditure had been doubled to Rs 28,000 crore, keeping the focus on infrastructure, including roads, water supply, and sewage systems.
As per Gupta Rs 2,144 crore will go towards supporting the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), to expand access to medical services.
Meanwhile, the government committed a total of Rs 6,874 crore towards healthcare infrastructure, including the expansion of the Ayushman Arogya Mandir initiative.
This marked the first budget by a BJP-led government in Delhi in over 26 years, following the party’s victory over the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the recent Assembly elections.
“This is not just another budget. It’s the beginning of Delhi’s transformation after years of stagnation. The previous government left the capital in economic distress, and we are here to rebuild,” she said.
Other Announcements
The Delhi government also provided an additional Rs 5 lakh in health coverage, complementing the Centre’s existing Rs 5 lakh under PM-JAY.
Additionally, the BJP government has allocated a budget of Rs 750 crore for the education sector and plans to distribute laptops among 1,200 students.
In an effort to clean Yamura River government committed Rs 1,250 crore. Additionally, the government allocated another Rs 500 crore each for setting up along upgrading sewage treatment plants, and Rs 250 crore for replacing old sewer lines.
Additionally, to tackle Delhi’s annual air pollution crisis, Rs 300 crore has been allocated for air quality management measures.
