The Centre’s social security schemes, including Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), and Atal Pension Yojana (APY), have together settled claims worth around Rs 25,160 crore since their launch in 2015, Union Minister of Finance Nirmala Sitharaman said on May 9, 2026.

The schemes completed 11 years on May 9, 2026. These schemes were launched in 2015 to expand access to low-cost insurance and pension coverage, particularly for underserved sections of society.

According to data shared by the finance ministry, PMJJBY, PMSBY, and APY have together recorded more than 940 million enrolments since launch.

PMJJBY Accounts For Majority Of Claims

Under PMJJBY, claims worth over Rs 21,500 crore have been settled for more than 1.07 million families so far, Sitharaman said.

The scheme offers life insurance coverage of Rs 2 lakh in case of death due to any cause. Individuals aged between 18 and 50 years can enrol through participating banks and post offices by paying an annual premium of Rs 436.

As of April 29, 2026, the scheme had recorded 270 million enrolments. Of these, 127.20 million were women subscribers, while 80.90 million enrolments came from Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana account holders.

PMSBY Settles Claims Worth Rs 3,660 Crore

The PMSBY scheme has settled claims worth nearly Rs 3,660 crore for more than 184,000 families, according to the finance minister.

PMSBY provides accidental death and disability insurance coverage for individuals aged 18-70 years at an annual premium of Rs 20. The scheme offers a coverage of Rs 2 lakh for accidental death or total disability and Rs 1 lakh for partial disability.

The scheme has recorded over 580 million enrolments till April 29, 2026. Around 274.50 million women and 193 million crore Jan Dhan account holders have enrolled under the scheme.

APY Enrolments Cross 90 Million

APY, aimed at providing old-age income security to workers in the unorganised sector, has crossed 90 million enrolments as of April 30, 2026.

The pension scheme guarantees a monthly pension ranging from Rs 1,000-5,000 after the age of 60, depending on the subscriber’s contribution. It is available to bank account holders aged 18-40 years who are not income tax payers.

Subscribers can contribute monthly, quarterly, or half-yearly. In case of the subscriber’s death before the age of 60, the spouse can continue contributions or withdraw the accumulated corpus.
