Summary of this article

  • Microsoft’s voluntary exit scheme covers eligible employees in four countries, including India

  • Severance pay and benefits depend on job level and service terms

  • Microsoft has not disclosed how many Indian employees qualify for the offer

Microsoft has opened a voluntary exit programme for eligible employees in India, the US, the UK and Canada, covering around 60,000 workers globally. The company has not disclosed how many of its roughly 23,000 employees in India qualify, or how many may choose to leave.

The offer gives eligible employees an option to leave Microsoft with financial support instead of waiting for a possible workforce restructuring. However, it is not open to everyone. Eligibility depends on the employee’s internal job level and whether their business unit is participating in the programme.

The announcement comes as Microsoft continues to adjust its workforce while investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure. Here is what employees need to know about the offer, the payout and its implications for workers in India.

What Is Microsoft's Voluntary Exit Offer

Microsoft's Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) allows eligible employees to leave the company in exchange for a severance package and transition support. Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced the programme in an internal communication on October 26.

The company said the initiative would give employees considering opportunities outside Microsoft a way to make the transition with support. It would also allow participating business units to adjust their workforce according to changing requirements.

Unlike a compulsory layoff, a voluntary exit programme gives eligible employees the choice to accept or decline the offer. However, employees must check the specific terms communicated to them before deciding whether to participate.

Microsoft introduced a similar voluntary retirement programme in the US earlier this year. The latest offer expands the approach to selected organisations across four countries, although the company has not disclosed how many employees will ultimately leave under the scheme.

Who Is Eligible For The Buyout

The programme covers employees at Microsoft's internal level 70 and below in participating organisations. These levels represent the company's job grades and include employees across different functions and seniority bands.

Eligibility is not uniform across Microsoft. Some teams and business units are included, while others are excluded depending on their operational requirements.

Reports have identified employees in areas such as AI experiences, Copilot, finance, human resources, Xbox, and Windows and Devices among those covered. Marketing, commercial business and security teams have been reported as excluded, alongside certain sales, engineering and corporate functions.

Employees should not assume they qualify simply because they work in one of the four countries covered by the announcement. Microsoft is expected to communicate individual eligibility and the applicable terms directly to employees in participating organisations.

The offer is also time-bound. Reports indicate that eligible employees have until early December to make a decision, with departures expected by December 31. The applicable deadline may differ by location or offer terms, so employees should rely on their official communication from Microsoft.
