  • Users pay e-challan via UPI BBPS apps instant confirmation

NPCI Bharat BillPay Limited (NBBL), a subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has processed more than one million e-challan transactions through its Bharat Connect platform.

NBBL has stated that the total value of these transactions has exceeded Rs 60 crore. The e-challan payment facility is currently available in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi.

What Is E-Challan And How Payments Are Made

An e-challan is a digitally generated traffic fine issued for violations such as overspeeding, signal jumping, riding without a helmet or illegal parking. The challan is linked to the vehicle registration number and recorded digitally instead of being issued as a paper receipt.

To pay an e-challan through Bharat Connect, users can access the service through bank applications, UPI or other digital payment apps that support Bharat Connect or Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS). Users are required to enter details such as the vehicle registration number or challan number to fetch pending fines. Once the challan details are displayed, payments can be made using UPI, debit cards, net banking or other supported digital payment modes. An instant payment confirmation is generated after the transaction is completed.

Andhra Pradesh Records Highest Transactions

According to NBBL, Andhra Pradesh accounted for more than 700,000 transactions since the service was launched in the state. Telangana and Gujarat also recorded a significant number of transactions, while Delhi and Himachal Pradesh were added recently.

More States Expected To Join

NBBL has notified that more states are expected to join the e-challan payment network in the coming period as the system expands.

Dr. Noopur Chaturvedi, MD and CEO of NBBL, said, “The E-challan category on Bharat Connect is becoming increasingly popular, having crossed the milestone of one million transactions. This achievement reflects the trust people place in our platform and signals a clear shift in consumer behaviour towards digital-first public services.”

Wider Shift Towards Digital Payments

This development comes amid wider use of digital payment systems in transport-related services. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways recently said user fee payments at National Highway toll plazas across the country are being processed through FASTag or Unified Payments Interface (UPI) from May 10, 2026.

The ministry said that the transition has not yet been implemented in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, West Bengal and Puducherry because of the Model Code of Conduct in place during the ongoing election process.
