The scheme was introduced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman through the 2024-25 Union Budget, PMIS (Prime Minister's Internship Scheme). It is a 12-month internship scheme dedicated to young Indian citizens who are currently unemployed or not pursuing full-time education. This exposure is supposed to provide students with a real work environment as part of some of the country’s top firms, focusing on employability and job readiness.
Interns will be allocated to companies selected from more than 500 companies across sectors present in India.
Stipend and Incentives
Under PMIS, each intern is entitled to a monthly stipend of Rs 5,000. Of this, Rs 500 is paid by the employer based on performance, conduct, and attendance. The remaining Rs 4,500 is directly transferred by the Government of India to the intern’s Aadhaar-linked bank account.
