The pension system has changed a great deal over the last 10 years, from being a distant and rule-based paperwork-heavy system to a technology-driven and in-person grievance redressal mechanism. In the recently held 16th All India Pension Adalat at Vigyan Bhavan in Delhi, the Union Minister Jitendra Singh emphasised that pensioners should be seen as people who still contribute a lot to society and whose experience is an important national asset.
In this regard, the Pension Adalat system has been an effective tool. These adalats are held time to time with pre-notification, and different departments, officials from concerned ministries, and other stakeholders gather at one place to resolve retirees’ pension-related grievances on the spot. So, pensioners can approach these adalats for a faster redressal of their grievance. This direct approach facilitates direct interaction between officials of different departments, where, instead of just sending official letters, they collectively fix the problem, and often right away.
Case Resolved In 16th Pension Adalat
In the 16th All India Pension Adalat, held between May 12-13, 2026, a total of 985 cases were resolved on the spot. It involved 37 different ministries and departments. These cases were selected based on the delay in rendering resolution. So, the cases which were pending for more than 45 days as of April 15, 2026, were taken up in the latest Pension Adalat, and 729 cases (around 74 per cent) of these were resolved.
During the proceedings, 26 high-priority cases were brought before the minister. Most of these were from the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Ministry of Railways. In one of the cases, a pensioner finally received Rs 74 lakh in benefits, while two other pensioners received benefits of Rs 46 lakh each. Notably, the Adalat also ran virtually, where 18 beneficiaries (pensioners) from different places, including Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, Bikaner in Rajasthan, Erode in Tamil Nadu, and Kolkata in West Bengal, joined via video conferencing.
Case Resolved In 15th Pension Adalat
Going back a little, the 15th Pension Adalat was conducted in December 2025, in which 1,087 complaints were handled during the adalat, and 815 cases were resolved right away. It also had some touching success stories. In one of the cases, a pensioner (Pritam Singh from Rewari, Haryana), whose complaint remained unresolved for 114 days, was resolved on the same day, when he informed about not receiving his General Provident Fund (GPF), gratuity, and money for unused leaves. The Ministry of Personnel announced a back payment totalling Rs 68 lakh to his bank account.
Digital Innovation And Outreach
Besides quick redressal of pension disbursal-related grievances, the process of life certificate submission has also become simpler for pensioners. By using biometric identification, they can submit a life certificate from home with just one click. This has immensely helped older pensioners who used to have to visit banks or treasury offices for physical verification. So far, more than ten million pensioners have benefited from this clear and easy-to-use system.
Since the start in 2017, fifteen Pension Adalats (sessions) have been held. These have dealt with a total of 27,812 cases, of which 19,948 complaints have been resolved during the adalats themselves, reflecting a success rate of over 72 per cent.
The minister urged wider use of social media and modern communication tools so that more and more pensioners across the country stay informed and connected to these improvement initiatives.
