Summary of this article
BPS urges the Centre to announce the pending DR hike and release arrears.
DR may rise from 60 per cent to 63 per cent, subject to approval.
The proposed revision is effective from July 1, 2026, with arrears expected.
Central government pensioners and family pensioners are awaiting the next dearness relief (DR) revision, which is expected to apply from July 1, 2026. The Bharat Pensioners Samaj (BPS) has approached the government to speed up the announcement and release the pending amount, including arrears.
In a letter dated October 22, 2026, BPS Secretary General Avinash Rajput requested the Cabinet Secretary to intervene and coordinate with the Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare and the Department of Expenditure under the Finance Ministry, according to LiveMint.
Pensioners’ Body Flags Delay Ahead Of Festive Spending
The BPS has highlighted that retirees had expected the revised DR rate to be announced before Dussehra on October 21. The organisation has also pointed to the additional household expenses associated with the festive season, making timely payments important for pensioners managing fixed incomes.
The delay has created uncertainty, particularly for elderly retirees and those who depend on their pension to meet routine living costs and medical expenses, according to the organisation.
BPS has urged the Cabinet secretary to take up the matter with the concerned departments and facilitate an early announcement. It has also sought the release of arrears for eligible central government pensioners and family pensioners.
Three-Point Revision Could Determine Additional Pension Payments
The next revision could raise the DR rate by three percentage points, according to estimates, from the existing 60 per cent to 63 per cent. The proposed increase, however, has not received official confirmation.
The revised rate is expected to be effective from July 1, 2026. Once approved, eligible pensioners could receive arrears for the period between this date and the implementation of the revised rate.
The extra contribution will depend on the pension amount and final DR rate announced by the government. Pensioners are requested to wait for the official notification about the revised rate and payment schedule.
CPI Data To Determine Relief Rates
The purpose of DR is to assist pensioners to cope with the effect of inflation on their regular income. The government considers the rate based on the changes in AICPI-IW. For the latest revision, the average index figures recorded between July 2025 and June 2026 will be taken into consideration for the calculation. The revised rate, once approved, will determine the additional relief payable to eligible pensioners.
Pensioners Await Official Decision After Cabinet Meeting Delay
A Cabinet meeting scheduled for October 21 had raised expectations of an announcement. However, the meeting did not take place, and the proposed DR revision is yet to be officially confirmed.
The absence of a Cabinet meeting does not rule out a separate announcement. Pensioners are awaiting confirmation of the revised rate, its effective date and the schedule for releasing arrears.
